How to Get a Dangerous Goods Licence in Brisbane & Queensland – DG Licence, SLP, Tanker Jobs & Truck Licences Explained

Oct 5
14 min read

Thinking about getting into fuel tankers, chemical tankers, aviation fuel, petroleum distribution, bulk dangerous goods or other specialist transport work in Queensland or New South Wales?

Two things you’re probably going to hear about pretty quickly are:

Dangerous Goods Driver Licence — commonly called your DG Licence

and

SLP — Safe Load Program

They are two completely different things, and if fuel tanker work is your goal, there is an important order to getting them.

DG training first → state DG Driver Licence issued → SLP afterwards.

Completing a Dangerous Goods course does not by itself mean you hold a Dangerous Goods Driver Licence.

In Queensland particularly, this distinction is important because the Dangerous Goods Driver Licence is an industry authority/product issued by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Once approved, it appears on an Industry Authority card; TMR can also issue an interim industry authority while the card is on its way. Queensland Government

And if you want to complete SLP through Oz Logistics Training, you must already hold a current Dangerous Goods Driver Licence before enrolling. Oz Logistics Training

Want to get your DG training or SLP in QLD or NSW?

For Dangerous Goods and Safe Load Program training, contact:

James Ralston – Oz Logistics Training

Facebook:

Oz Logistics Training provides TLILIC0001 – Licence to transport dangerous goods by road training as well as Safe Load Program training and other transport-industry courses. Oz Logistics makes it clear that successful completion of TLILIC0001 gives you the training outcome needed to approach the relevant state licensing authority — it is not your Dangerous Goods Driver Licence itself. Oz Logistics Training

Training and assessment delivered on behalf of RAISE Training – RTO 91655.

If you’re unsure what you need for the work you’re aiming for, speak with James before booking everything.

What exactly is a Dangerous Goods Driver Licence?

A Dangerous Goods Driver Licence is an additional authority/licence required to drive certain vehicles transporting dangerous goods above prescribed quantities.

It does not replace your normal driver licence or heavy vehicle licence.

If the truck requires HR, you still need HR.

If you’re driving a semi-trailer that requires HC, you still need HC.

If you’re driving a B-double or other multi-combination vehicle, you’ll need the appropriate MC licence.

The Dangerous Goods Driver Licence is an additional requirement for the dangerous-goods transport task.

In Queensland and NSW, a DG Driver Licence and dangerous-goods vehicle licence are generally required when dangerous goods are carried in a receptacle with a capacity of more than 500 litres, or where a receptacle contains more than 500kg of dangerous goods. Both states also provide an exemption for certain IBC loads totalling no more than 3,000 litres where the IBCs are not filled or emptied while on the vehicle. Queensland Government

So having something classed as dangerous goods somewhere on a truck does not automatically mean the driver needs a DG Driver Licence.

The quantity, packaging and way the goods are being transported matter.

Queensland: your DG Licence is an Industry Authority

This is the bit I really want to make clear for Queensland drivers.

The qualification TLILIC0001 and your Queensland Dangerous Goods Driver Licence are not the same thing.

You complete the approved DG training first.

Then you apply to the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads for your Dangerous Goods Driver Licence.

Queensland classifies Dangerous Goods Driver as an industry licence, and the Dangerous Goods Driver Licence is included on the Queensland Industry Authority card. Queensland Government

Once TMR approves the application, eligible applicants can receive an interim industry authority as evidence that they are authorised to perform the role until their Industry Authority card arrives. Queensland Government

So when somebody says:

“You need a valid DG before you can do SLP,”

for a Queensland driver they mean your actual current TMR-issued Dangerous Goods Driver industry authority/licence — not simply your TLILIC0001 Statement of Attainment.

How do I get a Dangerous Goods Driver Licence in Queensland?

To be eligible for a Queensland Dangerous Goods Driver Licence, TMR currently requires you to:

  • be a Queensland resident

  • hold a current Queensland open driver licence, or an eligible probationary/restricted licence where you previously held an open licence

  • have a medical certificate issued no more than six months before applying

  • have completed an approved DG driver training course no more than six months before applying

  • have an acceptable criminal history

  • have an acceptable traffic history. Queensland Government

The training unit is:

TLILIC0001 – Licence to transport dangerous goods by road

After successfully completing the training, you then apply for the actual Dangerous Goods Driver Licence/industry authority through TMR.

A new application can currently be lodged online where eligible, or in person. Queensland Government

TMR advises that applications may take up to six weeks to assess because criminal-history and traffic-history checks need to be completed. Transport Service Queensland

So if an employer has offered you a tanker position, don't assume you can finish the course on Friday and have your DG authority ready for work on Monday.

What medical do I need for a Queensland DG Licence?

For Queensland, the key medical document is:

F3712 – Medical Certificate for Motor Vehicle Driver

TMR states that the F3712 must be completed and assessed under commercial standards by a qualified medical practitioner.

You should complete Part 1 before seeing your doctor and tell the clinic that the appointment is for a commercial driver/Dangerous Goods Driver Licence medical, as the appointment may take longer than a standard consultation. Queensland Government

So when you're booking, say something along the lines of:

“I need a commercial driver medical for a Queensland Dangerous Goods Driver Licence using the F3712.”

That is much clearer than simply asking for a normal driver's medical.

What do I need to apply in Queensland?

For an in-person Queensland application, TMR currently lists items including:

Your current Queensland driver licenceEvidence of identityYour completed medical certificateYour Dangerous Goods course certificateDangerous Goods Driver Licence Application F4486The applicable licensing fee. Queensland Government

For online applications, supporting documents such as your course certificate and medical certificate are uploaded through the TMR service. Queensland Government

How long is a Queensland DG Driver Licence valid?

Queensland currently issues the Dangerous Goods Driver Licence for three years.

As at 1 July 2026, TMR lists the three-year Dangerous Goods Driver Licence fee at $67.30, and a separate criminal-history check fee may apply to relevant new applications. Queensland Government

Government fees can change, so check TMR before applying.

How do I get a Dangerous Goods Driver Licence in NSW?

NSW follows the same basic concept, but the authority responsible for dangerous-goods licensing is different.

In NSW, the Environment Protection Authority — EPA administers Dangerous Goods Driver Licences.

Service NSW says applicants must:

Complete TLILIC0001Be certified medically fit to drive by a GPHave a satisfactory driving history. Service NSW

When applying, you currently need documentation including:

Evidence that you completed TLILIC0001 no more than six months before the EPA receives your application. Medical assessment certificate. Certified driving-history records for the previous five years from each relevant licensing authority. Front and back copy of your driver licenceA recent passport photograph. Service NSW

Applications are made online through the NSW EPA's eConnect system.

Unlike Queensland, where the Dangerous Goods Driver Licence is an Industry Authority product through TMR, NSW issues its Dangerous Goods Driver Licence through the EPA. EPA NSW

What medical do I need in NSW?

NSW does not use Queensland's F3712 form.

For NSW, you need to satisfy the NSW EPA's Dangerous Goods Driver Licence medical requirements and be certified as medically fit to drive by a GP. Service NSW

So again, tell the doctor exactly why you're attending:

“I'm applying for a NSW Dangerous Goods Driver Licence and need the required commercial-driver medical assessment.”

How long is a NSW DG Licence valid?

The NSW EPA currently issues Dangerous Goods Driver Licences for five years.

For the 2026–27 financial year, the EPA lists the application and renewal fee at $66. EPA NSW

Again, always check the current government fee at the time you apply.

Does my Queensland DG work in NSW – or vice versa?

Yes, interstate recognition is another important point.

Queensland says a driver holding a current interstate Dangerous Goods Driver Licence may drive a dangerous-goods vehicle anywhere in Queensland and can continue using that interstate licence until it expires. Queensland Government

The NSW EPA states that a current DG Driver Licence issued by any Australian state or territory is recognised throughout Australia and allows you to drive a dangerous-goods vehicle in NSW. EPA NSW

So a driver working between Brisbane and Sydney does not need to hold separate Queensland and NSW Dangerous Goods Driver Licences at the same time simply because they're crossing the border.

You do, of course, still need to comply with the dangerous-goods transport rules that apply where you're operating.

What is SLP?

SLP stands for Safe Load Program.

People sometimes casually call it a Safe Load Pass, but the actual program is the Safe Load Program.

SLP is an industry training and identification program designed to give drivers, terminal operators and trainers the knowledge and skills needed to safely enter participating fuel terminals or depots and load bulk fuel tankers. Safe Load Program

The SLP training program covers five main areas:

Health and SafetyProduct PropertiesVehicle LoadingTanker and Gantry KnowledgeTraining Assessment. Safe Load Program

It is specifically relevant to petroleum loading.

You need a CURRENT DG Driver Licence before SLP

This is the part that should not be confused.

Completing TLILIC0001 is not enough.

Applying for your DG is not enough.

You need the actual current Dangerous Goods Driver Licence before you enrol in Oz Logistics Training's SLP course.

Oz Logistics Training lists the course prerequisite as TLILIC0001 plus a current Dangerous Goods Licence, and specifically states that the licence must be obtained before enrolling in the SLP course. Oz Logistics Training

The Safe Load Program's own application process also requires trainees to provide their current Australian driver licence and Dangerous Goods licence to their trainer when completing the face-to-face training. Safe Load Program

So the proper pathway is:

1. Complete TLILIC0001

2. Apply to QLD TMR or NSW EPA

3. Have your actual Dangerous Goods Driver Licence issued

4. Then complete SLP

For a Queensland driver, that means having the current Dangerous Goods Driver Licence industry authority.

For a NSW driver, that means having the current NSW EPA Dangerous Goods Driver Licence.

How long does SLP last?

Successful SLP trainees are issued an SLP identification card, which the Safe Load Program states is valid for two years. Safe Load Program

It is separate from your state-issued Dangerous Goods Driver Licence.

So you need to keep track of both expiry dates if the work you're doing requires both qualifications.

Is SLP the same as a DG Licence?

No.

A simple way to remember everything is:

Heavy Vehicle Licence – HR, HC or MC

Determines what size or combination of truck you are legally permitted to drive.

Dangerous Goods Driver Licence

The state-issued licence or authority allowing you to perform regulated dangerous-goods driving where a DG Driver Licence is required.

In Queensland, this is an industry authority/licence issued by TMR.

In NSW, it is issued by the NSW EPA.

SLP – Safe Load Program

Provides the petroleum-industry loading training and identification used at participating fuel-loading facilities.

Employer and site-specific training

Covers the particular tanker, terminal, product, procedures and equipment used by your employer.

One does not automatically replace the others.

What jobs can a DG Licence help you get?

This is where a Dangerous Goods Driver Licence can become a very useful addition to an experienced driver's qualifications.

DG-related transport jobs can include:

Fuel tanker driverPetrol tanker driverDiesel delivery driverChemical tanker driverBulk chemical transport driverAviation fuel driverJet fuel transport driverAirport fuel driverLPG tanker driverGas transport driverMining fuel driverPetroleum distribution driverFuel farm driverIndustrial chemical driverDangerous goods freight driverBulk liquid tanker driverSpecialist tanker driver

Exactly what qualifications are required still depends on the product, vehicle and employer.

Fuel tanker driving

Fuel tanker work is probably one of the most common reasons drivers start looking into DG + SLP.

Fuel tanker drivers may transport:

PetrolDieselPremium fuelsAviation fuelJet fuelOther petroleum products

Fuel may be transported between terminals and depots and locations including:

Service stationsTransport yardsIndustrial customersFarmsMine sitesAirportsFuel farmsCommercial customers

And the driver's responsibilities can go well beyond simply driving from A to B.

Depending on the operation, tanker work can involve loading compartments, checking products, preventing cross-contamination, connecting hoses, unloading, documentation, ignition control, tanker equipment, terminal procedures and emergency requirements.

Chemical tanker work

Chemical tanker drivers may transport products such as:

AcidsAlkalisSolventsIndustrial chemicalsCleaning chemicalsCorrosive productsOther regulated dangerous goods

This kind of work may involve additional requirements around:

Product compatibilitySegregationPPEContamination controlLoading and unloading proceduresValves and hosesDocumentationEmergency response

Your DG Driver Licence is part of the qualification picture, but employers still need to ensure you are trained and competent in the specific products and equipment you're working with.

Aviation fuel and jet fuel jobs

Dangerous Goods qualifications can also lead towards specialised aviation-fuel work.

Jobs can include:

Aviation fuel transportJet fuel transportAirport fuel deliveriesFuel farm workAirfield tanker operationsAircraft refuelling

Depending on the position, additional requirements can include airport security clearances, airside driving authorities, airport inductions and employer-specific aviation-fuel training.

What truck licence do I need for tanker work?

Your DG Driver Licence does not determine the size of truck you can drive.

That comes back to your normal heavy-vehicle licence.

HR – Heavy Rigid

HR can be relevant to rigid tanker operations as well as work such as:

Fuel deliveriesWaste trucksTippersConcrete agitatorsHeavy rigid freight

HC – Heavy Combination

HC allows you to drive heavy combinations such as semi-trailers.

Many fuel, chemical and tanker operations use HC combinations.

MC – Multi Combination

MC is used for combinations such as B-doubles and road trains and is commonly seen in:

Fuel transportBulk haulageInterstate linehaulMining transportB-double tanker workRoad train tanker operations

You don't automatically need MC simply because you want to drive a tanker.

The truck configuration determines the heavy-vehicle licence required.

How much can tanker drivers earn?

There is no single DG Driver wage because holding a DG Licence covers a huge variety of jobs.

Pay depends on things including:

HR, HC or MC licence classTanker experienceProduct being transportedLocationRosterNight shiftWeekendsPublic holidaysOvertimeRemote workEnterprise agreements

Current Indeed salary data gives a useful indication rather than a guaranteed wage.

As at September 2026, Indeed reported an average tanker-driver base rate of approximately $47.74 per hour in Queensland, based on 25 reported salaries. Indeed

For NSW, Indeed reported approximately $41.89 per hour, although that figure was based on only seven reported salaries, so it should be treated as a rough guide rather than an industry-wide pay rate. Indeed

Actual fuel, chemical, mining and specialist tanker earnings can vary substantially once overtime, shift penalties, allowances and rosters are included.

And there is a reason specialised dangerous-goods work can attract stronger rates:

there is more responsibility attached to the job.

Can I get my DG before I have a tanker job?

Yes.

An experienced HR, HC or MC driver may choose to complete DG training and obtain their actual Dangerous Goods Driver Licence before applying for specialist work.

That can make sense if you're specifically targeting:

Fuel tanker jobsChemical tanker jobsMining fuel jobsAviation fuelBulk liquid transportPetroleum distributionDangerous goods freight

But the licence itself does not turn somebody into an experienced tanker driver.

Employers still need to make sure a driver is competent in the particular tanker, product and operation.
