5 COMMON REASONS PEOPLE FAIL THEIR HR TRUCK DRIVING TEST IN QUEENSLAND
Getting your HR licence in Brisbane? Sometimes it's not the driving ability that lets people down. It's the little things.
After more than a decade working in the transport industry and now training people to get their heavy vehicle licences, there's one thing I've noticed.
Sometimes the drivers who are already comfortable behind the wheel are the ones who need reminding of the basics!
Being confident is great. Being too comfortable? That's where silly mistakes start creeping in.
Whether you're going from a car licence to HR or upgrading your existing truck licence, here are five things worth remembering before your practical driving assessment.
1. GETTING TOO COMFORTABLE BEHIND THE WHEEL
This one catches people out more than you'd think.
Drivers with previous truck driving experience can sometimes become a little too relaxed during their assessment.
They know how to drive, they're comfortable with the vehicle, and they start slipping into their everyday driving habits.
That might mean driving with one hand unnecessarily, taking both hands off the steering wheel, forgetting a mirror check or simply not paying enough attention to what's happening around them.
Your driving assessment isn't the time to switch onto autopilot.
Confidence is fantastic, but you still need to demonstrate safe driving habits from start to finish.
2. NOT CHECKING YOUR MIRRORS ENOUGH
One of the biggest differences between driving a car and driving a heavy rigid truck is how much you need to rely on your mirrors.
You're operating a much larger vehicle with different blind spots, a longer wheelbase and a greater turning area.
Your mirrors help you monitor:
Other vehicles around you
Your position within your lane
Your rear wheels when turning
Cyclists, pedestrians and surrounding traffic
What's happening behind and beside your truck
And it's not just about checking them before changing lanes!
Good mirror awareness should be part of your driving throughout the entire assessment.
If you aren't regularly checking your mirrors, you're missing important information about what's happening around your truck.
3. TAKING YOUR HANDS OFF THE STEERING WHEEL
This one often comes back to being too comfortable.
Some drivers have spent years driving trucks and developed habits they don't even realise they're doing.
Resting an arm on the window, steering casually with one hand or briefly taking both hands off the wheel might feel normal to them.
But during your HR driving assessment, you need to demonstrate that you're maintaining proper control of the vehicle.
Of course, you'll need to operate gears and other controls when required.
The important thing is maintaining safe, appropriate steering control rather than developing unnecessary habits that compromise your ability to respond quickly.
Just because you've always driven a certain way doesn't necessarily mean it's the safest way.
4. MAKING SILLY DECISIONS UNDER PRESSURE
Sometimes people make mistakes that have absolutely nothing to do with their ability to operate a truck.
They might:
Misjudge a gap in traffic
Rush through an intersection
Choose the wrong lane
Forget to give way
Approach a roundabout too quickly
Make a last-minute decision instead of planning ahead
And sometimes they know they've made the wrong decision the second they've made it!
Driving a heavy vehicle requires planning ahead, patience and good judgement.
If you're unsure whether there's enough room or time to complete a manoeuvre safely, don't rush it.
It's better to wait a few extra seconds than make a decision you can't take back.
5. FORGETTING HOW BIG THE TRUCK ACTUALLY IS
This is particularly important for drivers upgrading from a car licence to HR.
A heavy rigid truck doesn't turn, brake or position itself like a car.
You need to consider your vehicle's length, width, height, turning path and rear-wheel tracking.
Common mistakes include:
Turning too tightly
Misjudging the position of the rear wheels
Getting too close to kerbs
Poor lane positioning
Not allowing enough room when turning
Approaching corners or intersections too quickly
The key is learning to think ahead rather than reacting at the last second.
You aren't just driving the front of the truck. You need to know where the whole vehicle is going.
DOES MAKING ONE MISTAKE MEAN YOU'LL FAIL YOUR HR TEST?
Not necessarily!
Different mistakes are assessed differently, and the outcome depends on the seriousness of the error and the applicable Queensland assessment criteria.
Some errors may affect your assessment result, while serious safety-related mistakes can result in an unsuccessful assessment.
The important thing is to remain focused and continue demonstrating safe driving practices.
